The current tavern on the current location dates back to 1946. The first hotel was built in 1879, by Hector McKay.
Coroglen used to be called Gumtown, until the name was changed in 1921. Around 1900, Gumtown had three stores, the hotel (with 25 bedrooms), two boarding houses, a bakery, a billiard room and a bootmaker. There was also the Town Hall and the school. Today, the school, the town hall, and the tavern are all that remains of Gumtown.
Back then the Waiwawa Hotel was a "very up to date place" but in 1922 that building was destroyed in a fire, and the hotel was relocated to a temporary premise at the farm home of the Olivers. The publican at that time was John O'Sullivan. In 1946, the hotel licence was transferred to the current site. The hotel took over the building which up to then was used as the Post Office.
The Post Office was moved to a new building, where it remained until 1969 when it moved back into the front of the Tavern accommodation building (the original building). In 2006, the last vestige of the Post Office was removed - the mail box on the corner of the Tapu Road and State Highway 25 was moved into Whitianga, outside the New World supermarket.
Things have changed over the years. At one time the tavern was also a petrol station, situated in front of the tavern building on the corner, with a general store. Later, there was a video store. Now the original tavern building has become the Backpackers. At first, half of the "new" tavern building was storage for the Off-licence, with just a small public bar, and an even smaller private bar. The kitchen was a small BBQ outside in the back yard. Now the bar area sweeps all the way from the dining area along to the old bar areas, with a veranda all along the front giving views of the farm and the hills. You can sit out there, enjoying your beer, watching calves being born across the road.
Over the years, the hotel name changed from Waiwawa Hotel, to the Coroglen Hotel, and then the Coroglen Tavern.
An old photo, with a horse trek party outside the front of the current tavern building.
